Gawking at Americans (I)

The United States has a number of military bases on the island of Okinawa – they have had a presence there since World War II. So we decided to go and find some American’s to gawk at. Out modes of transport were bus and taxi…

Our destination was The Marine Corps Air Station Futenma – or more accurately, a tall mushroom-like lookout atop a hill which overlooks the base. We had heard that it was so close to the flight path of the planes that the pilots’ faces were visible as the planes took off and landed!

The Lookout

Unfortunately, we only saw one plane take off while we were there and it didn’t get very close to us.

On the positive side, we did see this graffiti on the wall – which identifies the writer who declares his desire for broccoli.

In the evening we returned to the cafe/restaurant with the Japanese garden. It was very Japanesey but at least I was able to eat chicken.

The Battle of Okinawa

At about 3am, I was woken by a noise and looked about the room to see what was happening. This is what I saw…

Today we used the regular bus (rather than an organised bus tour bus) to travel to various exciting destinations. At one point we had to change busses at a remote location. Below (right) is the bus terminal where we found ourselves lost and stranded without a suitable bus. Yuko had to ask for directions at the terminal, which was most primitive building I’ve seen in some time (in any country)…

We visited a memorial and museum which tells the history of The Battle of Okinawa. It was sad and disturbing to learn fate of the civilians, and particularly the school children who were involved.

Next, we went to a place where there is a cave – the kind with stalactites etc. After taking the cave tour, we were forced to walk through and past a large number of souvenir shops in the hope we would buy something. We then attended a live show where some dudes danced and beat drums. It was very exciting indeed…

As we have seen at many places in Japan, there was free alcohol provided for the purpose of ridding our filthy hands of swine flu…

Military Banding

As I was walking to the cafe this morning, I was accosted by a large man in an army uniform who encouraged me to purchase his wares. I didn’t want to go against the military, so I purchased a wrist band. He offerred me a pink one at first, but to avoid possible ridicule I opted for a stylish blue one…

It was also free meat day – so we ate free meat…
