Last night we took Keiko to the airport for her flight to Tokyo. She arrive safely on Friday morning. But since the quake, we haven’t heard from her…

Dentistry

Yuko flew out today for another dentistry themed trip to Japan. This required us to wake up at 6am and drive to the airport…

Arriving at the Airport

After Yuko checked in, we found a new cafe which has opened since out last visit. This is our new favourite airport cafe. It has very comfortable seating, a lot of space and the food is adequate…

Then Yuko went through the gate, leaving me with a lot of free time…

Wonders of Universe Revealed

Yesaterday morning I got an email from one of the dudes from the astronomy club. He suggested that three of us head down to Bargo to do some observing as the forecast looked good. So we went.

The place was an abandoned airstrip just ourside the country town of Bargo, southwest of Sydney. The drive down there took 1 hour 20 minutes. We met in the town, and then we drove to the airstrip following the guy who knew the way.

Arriving on the old airstrip

The dude who invited us has a 16 inch scope which he wheels around like a wheelbarrow…

We set up at the sourthern end of the strip. There was a bit of cloud about, but it cleared by the time it got dark…

My scope is the black one on the right

The sky was the darkest I’ve seen for a long time, making for a magnificent night of viewing.

We viewed a long list of objects all over the sky. At one point, the wheelbarrow guy had six galaxies visible at the same time in his scope! That was the Fornax galaxy cluster (picture below is from Wikipedia original here)… anything that’s not round is probably a galaxy…

We started packing up just before midnight and I got home at about 1.30am.

Pre-plane-crash Dinner

Tomorrow morning Yuko will be travelling on an aeroplane. So today she said that, in case the plane crashes, we should have a romantic dinner, as it would be our last night together. So we went to La Zucca…

It’s called La Zucca because of the pumpkins which adorn the ceiling…

Food pictures below… It was very nice indeed…

Yuko Returns With Nikon

Yuko returned from Japan today. Being Thursday, I would normally be working, but I took the day off so that I could pick Yuko up from the airport. I will work tomorrow instead.

Yuko can’t go to Japan without buying some new gadget – this time it’s a camera…

In fact, she has sold all her other SLR cameras and replaced them with just a single Nikon – the D700…

Yuko Flies Out (again)

Yuko’s flight was at 8.50am, so we woke up very early and I drove Yuko to the airport. After she checked in we had coffee at the courtyard cafe which is near the observation deck…

Yuko went through the departure gate at about 8am…

Then I went home and decided to clean my keyboard (the music kind). I haven’t used it for a long time and it’s been uncovered. The keys had accumulated a serious layer of dust. It could not be dislodged with a simple cloth – it needed soap and water and scrubbing! But I didn’t want to risk getting water in the electronics.

I decided I would have to clean the keys upside-down so that any excess water would fall away from the electronic bits. It was a bit awkward, but the result was a clean keyboard which still works…

New Bridge of Death?

Could this be the new Bridge of Death???

The newly expanded Library has been open for a few weeks now, but today was the first time we’ve had a look at it. We were impressed by the vast expanse of books and the other stuff found in libraries.

Yuko liked the fact that the study desks have power sockets for charging your electronic devices. It looks like a good place to go and blog on a hot day…

In the afternoon, Yuko suddenly announced that she would go to Japan tomorrow! She then corrected herself – she will go the day after tomorrow (Sunday). So she went out at 4.30pm to go to the city to buy her ticket…

This trip will be for photographic exploits and dentistry.

The Complicated Day

It was a complicated day peppered with minor debacles.

First, I got up at 5.15am and drove Belinda to the Lane Cove doctor. This is for a periodic service, and registration. As I was there well before the doctor himself arrives, I had arranged to leave Belinda parked outside. Then I walked home.

Belinda Waits for the Doctor

Next, to the airport to pick Yuko up. Her flight was due in at 7.40am. However, when I arrived at the airport and looked at the arrivals board, I saw that the plane was going to be almost two hours late…

So I had to hang around drinking coffee (top) and watching planes for a couple of hours. Yuko eventually came through the gate at about 10.15am…

The other thing happening today was the moving of the final item out of Mother’s house. After a week of calling dudes and leaving messages without getting any response. I finally made contact with a professional safe-moving dude yesterday, and he had offered to do the job today at 11am.

I had assumed that Yuko would be home by then and would be able to supervise to operation while I was at work. However, this plan was thrown into disarray when Mitsy’s battery went flat again – and with Belinda at the doctor, we were down to only one car today. So if I drove to work, Yuko would have no car to get to and from Mother’s house for the safe-moving. I therefore decided that I would not go to work, but instead Skyped in a request to work from home today – starting at around lunchtime.

The safe moving dude arrived and demonstrated his skills. He brought his own crane! We were very happy to finally have everything out of the house – ready for the handover to the new owners…

Moving the Safe

After the safe was safely moved, I worked at home for the remainder of the afternoon. Then, we went to Epitome to celebrate Yuko’s return and of course the successful safe moving…
