Job

Today I received and accepted a job offer as a result of last week's interviews. This means that I will be working in the city again (more or less) from late August.

Naturally, we went to Taiki to celebrate. Mother wore a stylish new hat, which had just arrived from her milliner...

Sign

There's a new sign being errected on Epping Road. A casual inspection suggests that it might be a low carbon emission model...

New Pole

There is a new light pole in the carpark at Lane Cove. When we saw it this morning we were very excited. Yuko even hugged it...

Snow Storm

In the afternoon there was a snow storm. it didn't actually snow at Lane Cove, but I went out walking at about 3pm just as dark clouds began to cover the area. Then it suddenly became very cold and began raining so I ran home.

Later I saw on the news that snow had been reported in some nearby suburbs. However the offical word is that it was 'soft hail'.

Second Interview

This afternoon I had another interview. This was a followup to Tuesday's intervew. So again, I took the afternoon off and went to the city. This time I did not go home to change, but instead went directly to the city to drink beer with two former work colleagues from my dim distant past.

I've known one of these dudes (Carlos) for 25 years, and the other (Santana) for about twenty, from a time when we all worked for the same company in Lane Cove West.

Former colleagues Santana and Carlos (and beer)

They both wrote their email addresses on a napkin

After leaving the pub, I went back to the carpark and changed into my interview clothes. Here are some city sights I saw on the way...

Big white box at Circular Quay

After the interview, I went to Starbucks to wait for Yuko who was coming over to meet me for dinner. We had dinner at the Quay Bar which is located on the plaza at the front of Customs House at the Quay. This is another place we used to go to regularly when I worked in the city. Although it was a cold evening, we sat outside under the warmth of gas heaters.

After discussions with our colleague, we have decided to reveal more of our identities (apart from red oval faces). Please refer to me as Carlos and to him as Santana.

It was the one at the Quay. I don't know its fate yet, but it was busy so perhaps it will be spared.

Cycleway Breakfast

A few days I got an email from a reader who has been known to post on this blog as Green Man. He drew my attention to the fact that the company I work for would be hosting a free breakfast for cyclists to celebrate the completion of the Epping Road Cycleway.

He urged me to cycle on the day and partake of the free food. However I was not enthusiastic.

The breakfast was today and, as it turned out Green Man piked! I went and had a look at the event but I was surprised by the dinkiness of it. Anyway, I took some pictures...

Morning
Afternoon

Interview

My contract at a well know company in Macquarie Park will be ending soon, and so I'm in the job market again.

This afternoon I had my first interview at a company in the city. I took the afternoon off and went home to change into my interview clothes. Then, I drove to the city in my high carbon emission vehicle.

Although I used to drive the same route every day when I worked in the city, today I missed an exit and had to take a detour through Kings Cross to get back onto the correct road! Fortunately I had allowed plenty of time and so this minor debacle did not make me late.

Yuko also went to the city separately to finalise the bookings for our upcoming holiday. We will be taking a short trip when my contract ends to spend any money that we might have left over.

We had planned to meet up for dinner after my interview. I got to the meeting spot in the QVB 40 minutes early so I decided to have coffee at one of the cafes there (see afternoon coffe picture above). Just as my coffee arrived, Yuko called me and said she was in another cafe in the QVB. It turned out she was in the cafe exactly below mine and one level down and she had also just ordered! So we both had coffee alone and it was very sad! But soon I finished my coffee and went down the escalator to find Yuko and there was much merriment.

I told Yuko about my interview and she was very excited.

Then we went to The Dome for dinner. This is a place we used to go to sometimes when I worked in the city. It's the kind of place where stuff that tastes exactly like tap water costs $9.00. However the food is very nice indeed, and we both ate dead birds.

The Dome

The walls are now adorned with pants. We had dinned under Grant Hackett's pants...

Balcony Walls Complete

The renovation of the balcony at Epitome is now complete, and we tested it extensively this weekend. The plastic walls were installed a few days ago. Now, with a roof and walls we are protected against the elements while we lazily sip our coffee.

We can now sit 'outside' without being outside on cold/windy days

Rain Garden Progress

The rain gardens have now been lined with concrete and one of them has a drain installed. This appears to be to allow the rain garden to fill with water, but not to overflow.

Noswonky's Most Exciting Moments - No. 8 - The World Youth Day Cross Comes to Riverview

World Youth Day 2008 is about to happen in Sydney, and today the Journey of the Cross came to our humble suburb of Riverview.

It was carried through the grounds of The College which is just across the road from our house. We went over to gawk at the activity and to take pictures. Although we are atheists, it was very exciting indeed...

Cake

When I arrived at work today, a dude gave me a cake. Not just me - they were handing out company-branded cakes to everyone. I didn't ask why - I just ate it!

Welcom to the World of Japanese Sake

At Taiki (The Japanese restaurant) for the next couple of Tuesdays they are having a Sake Man on site to give away free samples and to push his wares. So we decided to go to Taiki for a night of drinking.

Hiroshi - the Sake Man displays his wares

We drank a couple of different kinds of Sake and the Sake Man gave us some information about Sake. The sake was nice, and as it is not subject to the new Rudd-alcopop tax, it's a good choice for binge drinking. But of course, we drank in moderation.

Death by Emu

Yuko's least favourite animal is the Emu. This has been the case since the day she was chased along the walkway at Circular Quay by an Aboriginal man dressed as an Emu. Unfortunately this incident happened several years ago in the days before I carried my camera everywhere, so no photographs exist.

Today, an article in the SMH showed that Yuko's fear may be justified. The table below shows the number of deaths caused by various animals over a five year period. The savage horse topped the list of killers, but the Emu was responsible for two deaths...

Killer Emu

Garage Sale

We used to go to multiple garage sales every weekend, but recently we've mainly stayed away. Today we saw a sign while driving back from Epitome and stopped at a garage sale in Sofala Avenue. It was very exciting indeed and Yuko bought three items (which I don't remember).

0.5 Anniversary

Today was our 0.5th wedding anniversary. For this reason (and also because we'd run out of wine), we decided to open one of the bottles which we received from Keiko and Edwin at our wedding...

Yuko Smashes Cookie Jar

In the evening, Yuko smashed the cookie jar in a fit of rage. The cookies spilled out onto the floor and were probably also ridden with fragments of broken glass. Despite this Yuko ate them!

Station

I went for a walk at lunch time and came upon the new Macquarie Park railway station. When this station opens I hope many people will come to work by train so that there will be more space for me to park my carbon-emitting gas-guzzling climate-destroying transport device.

Beer and the Invisible Door

We took Mother to Taiki where she watched us drink beer...

Mother watches beer

Then we walked to the car and Yuko saw a dead duck for sale in a chinese shop. When she tried to enter the shop to buy the duck, she walked into a glass door which was invisible to her. Fortunately she was not badly injured and she bought the duck anyway. However, I said that we should make a legal claim against the shop for having an unsafe invisible door.

Mother and Yuko walk to the car just moments before Yuko walked into the invisible door.

Green Things

Today Vito (our gardener) came. He cut some bushes, put the bits in a green bin and charged us $125.
