We went to Collaroy so that Yuko could lie on the ground and take pictures of passing dogs and their owners...

Then we tried out our mobile broadband access at the beach. It worked very well. This means we can continue visiting Collaroy beach in the future.

Yuko decided she wanted to photograph animals, so we went to the zoo. The carpark at the zoo is being dug up for an unknown purpose, so the parking is limited. There was even an electronic sign that said "Limited Parking" so that we wouldn't think it was unlimited.
As a result, there were cars parked on both sides all along the road leading down to the water. This despite it being marked "No Stopping" and a dude in a uniform writing $185 parking tickets!

When we got inside they gave us each a disguise to wear so that the animals wouldn't recognise us...
We saw many animals, but Yuko was most interested in the apes...

I went walking this morning and came upon the burnt out shell of a car at TamBayRes. Could this signal the return of the North Shore Fire Bug?

Yuko's Camera Debacle of a couple of weeks ago was resolved today when the replacement arrived. This time it really is a digital camera. We know that because there is no place to insert the film.
The strange thing is that we were able to use Canon's ZoomBrowser software to download images from the Minolta camera. It just worked first time with no problem at all.
This is odd because we have never been able to get it to work with Yuko's Canon EOS 30D camera - which is the one that the software came with.

We drove over to Darling Harbour so that we could sit in a cafe with our computers and appear to be sophisticated. Whether it worked is a matter for speculation, but we had a nice coffee, and determined that there are lots of WiFi networks there, but all of them demand money.

At about 10.30pm there was a blackout. It appeared to be affecting the whole area. I took several pictures of the blackout...

Sky and Pixie were supposed to arrive today between 8am and 2pm. So we had planned to stay home to wait for them.
I got up slightly early for a Saturday to make sure I would be awake and dressed in the unlikely event that the dude arrived at 8am. But at about 7.45am when I got out of the shower, I heard voices in the living room. It was Yuko talking to the delivery dude who had arrived early!
So we unpacked them...

Then, the big problem - installing Japanese Windows on Yuko's computer. Yuko actually had a genuine Japanese Vista CD which she had purchased in Japan. So I set about installing that.
It seemed to work...
But it didn't really work. Although it appeared that Vista was installed, it would not boot from the hard disk. It would only boot if a Vista CD was in the drive. But it didn't matter if it was the Japanese or the English CD - either way it would boot into Japanese Vista. But with no CD in the drive, we got this black screen of death...
None of the options on this screen worked |
Of course I also had to re-install the drivers for the built-in devices - in particular the WiFi and Bluetooth. But Although the drivers seemed to install without a problem, the devices refused to work.
So we gave up for now. Yuko will call her computer man (Mr. Honda) who has the advantage over both of us that he knows stuff about computers, and also speaks Japanese.
But despite the problems, Yuko played happily with Sky...
And we took stock of our inventory of computers...
From left - Pixie, Sky, Fifi, Dixie and Fujiko II (Desktop machines not shown) |
So then we went to Epitome after all. Yuko bought a new bag to carry Sky - $5.

Sky and Pixie are getting close...
We went to Deli Hutt again. This time they didn't spill our drinks, the staff spoke English, and we could hear them speaking - which are all improvements since our last visit.

Today it was time to buy some computers - one each. They will be called Sky Blue and Pixie Blue. Sky will replace Fujiko and Pixie will replace Dixie.
They should arrive in about a week...

While shopping in the supermarket, I encountered Mother shopping in the supermarket. We had a conversation in which we criticised each other's unhealthy purchasing choices. Then I helped to carry her shopping to the car...

Belinda's doctor called me at work to tell me that she was ready to come home. I went to pick her up after work - but I was in for a surprise.
They said I had to pay $550.00 excess for the surgery! As the accident had been the other person's fault, and NRMA had never told us that this was in doubt, or that an excess was payable, I was a tad surprised.
The car doctor called NRMA to check that this was correct. I also talked to the NRMA woman. She said that we had to pay the excess because we had not provided the address of the person at fault. It would have been nice to know this in advance as we might have decided not to go ahead with the full repair. We could have just replaced the indicator glass (probably for less than $550.00).
We can still get the money back if we can find the address of the other party. We have their phone number, but they have already refused to give us their address, so we might be out of luck.
At least Belinda is back to full health...

On my way to work, I saw a strange sight - a small house travelling through the petrol station. I pursued it onto Epping Road to get a closer look. It was the the Mutt Hut!

Today Yuko went to the post office to pick up the package which they pretended to try to deliver yesterday. It was a camera she had bought on-line. But when she started to examine it, she began to suspect something was amiss. The card-slot was nowhere to be found, and then when she finally found a door that opened, the whole back of the camera opened revealing the space where the film goes!
Yes, she was expecting digital, but got film. The confusion was caused by the fact that the model numbers of the film and digital versions of this camera are the same except that one of them includes 'D' and the other does not.

Today we looked at the notice boards which are behind the counter at Epitome. The staff have pinned photos all over one of the boards, and most of them were taken by Yuko.

Today it was time for Belinda to go in for surgery to repair the damage from the recent incident between Belinda and a black Honda in the Lane Cove carpark.
In the morning I drove Belinda to the doctor, and then walked home - which took 40 minutes. During my walk, it began to rain quite heavily and I became soaked. I got home at about 8.20am and after showering and putting on dry clothes, I drove Mitsy to work as usual. However the episode did mean that I arrived at work later than normal, forcing me to resort to drinking takeaway coffee at my desk (see coffee picture above).

The Postman Doesn't Ring Twice
Yuko was expecting a package today, so she stayed home and put this sign on the door...
Sign to "A Postman" |
The postman didn't knock or ring! But later we found this card in the mailbox...
Note the surname |
This has exposed a Post Office scam! While they claim to have tried to deliver the package, the truth is that they made no such attempt. Instead they just dropped the little card in the mailbox, forcing us to travel to the post office the following day.
Bastards!

Yuki Kumagai and her band were performing in Lane Cove Plaza this morning. We hadn't seen them since that fateful night in September when I crashed the car on the way home from Yuki's gig at Balmain. Today we sat outside at Epitome and Yuki came over and said hello between sets.
|
|
After they finished playing, we went over to talk to them. At one point, Yuki hugged me. So to get revenge, Yuko had to hug John. This can be seen in today's video...
Yuko gave Tara (one of Epitome's staff) the photos of her that Yuko had taken on a previous occasion. Tara liked at least one of them. Several of Yuko's staff pictures are now on display on the notice board behind the counter at Epitome.

After eating at the Red Chopstick, we went to Epitome for dessert and coffee. There was a dude there playing live music. Strangely, he was playing downstairs with almost no audience, while most of the diners were making merry upstairs. We sat downstairs and listened to the music.
He was an adequate player/singer. Yuko photographed him...

[ Link to this entry ]Surely this headline is just for April Fool's Day...
Mother invited us to dinner at her house, but there was a debacle. She put a piece of dead sheep in the oven and then went to sleep. When she woke up a couple of hours later, the oven was off and the meat was still raw. So she called me and asked me to pick up a pre-cooked chicken.
Cooked chicken replaced raw sheep |
It was a good chicken, so the debacle wasn't so bad.
