Land of the Long White Sheep (Part 7)

In this, the (probably) penultimate episode, I stand in the shadow of a failed explorer, Yuko "does business" with a Kiwi, we go in search of wildlife on the high seas, and then drink New Zealand's biggest coffee.

Masuya

Yuko met me in the city after work and we went to Masuya for dinner. Although the food was generally good, Yuko complained to the manager about several things. Here's the list...

  • The dish I ordered didn't look like the picture in the menu.
  • The meat was just a bit too tough to eat with chopsticks because it requires ripping and cutting the meat with the teeth.
  • Yuko initailly forgot to order rice, so she added it to her order after a few minutes. But then they brought just the rice before the main course.

Whitegood Arrives

Today our washing machine was delivered, but there was a small debacle.

I had intended to disconnect the old machine last night, and move it aside to make room for the new one. But I was working on Yuko's new web site until after 1am and I didn't want to spend today as a zombie... so I left the machine. I assumed that the bastard delivering the new machine would be able to slide the old machine out of the way - but I was wrong. Instead, he refused to put the move the old machine and left the new one in the garage.

Whitegoods I

In the morning we went to Harvey Norman at Chatswood to purchase a new washing machine. We walked in and quickly picked out a machine from the lineup. We chose the one with the fewest lights, buttons and digital displays. Instead, it uses an ancient technology called knobs to control its function.

The machine was marked $629, but Yuko wanted to haggle. So I walked away to a safe distance so that Yuko could haggle with the sales woman, whose name was Lizzy. But I stayed close enough to overhear the conversation...

Yuko: I will buy this one... simply... for $590.
Lizzy: Why should I give it to you for $590?
Yuko: Because I'm a good customer of Harvey Norman, and I'm a nice person.
Lizzy: Are you?
Yuko: Yes, I'm a very nice person.
Lizzy: Alright... $590.

It will be delivered on Tuesday.

Whitegoods II

Meanwhile, Mother is also in the market for whitegoods - specifically a fridge. She called me to say that her friend (and occasional poster to this blog) Lady Macbeth had located a suitable fridge on eBay. I was therefore recruited to drive Mother to Paddington in the afternoon to view the fridge. We drove over and viewed the fridge at a unit in Paddington. It was a Silvergood rather than a Whitegood and in near new condition. It was decided that Lady Macbeth will bid in the online auction which is due to finish on Tuesday night.

I took Mother to Paddington in the little yellow car

After viewing the fridge, Mother asked me to take her to The Good Guys to compare prices of similar fridges. We found one identical to the one on eBay priced at about $2000.

I also spotted a washing machine identical to the one Yuko and I bought this morning. It was even cheaper than Yuko's haggled price of $590...

Ruby Slipper - Registered

This weekend I began working on Yuko's new web site. It will be the portal to her photographic services. Tonight we made a final decision on the domain name - ruby-slipper-photo.com - which I registered and set up on my hosting service. It will take a few more days before it goes live.

Graunched Whitegood

Our washing machine is graunched! It runs for five seconds and then stops. Before it became completely graunched it was making strange sounds - something like electrical arcing.

This, and that fact that we didn't like the machine anyway, has prompted us to buy a new machine. But in the mean time, it's hand washing...

The Arthouse

Yuko came to the city to meet me after work and we went to the Arthouse Hotel for dinner. It is a multi-level establishment. There's the ground, the attic and the middle bit - which is where we went.

The Arthouse Hotel (ground and middle bit)

The food is adequate and it's not too crowded in the restaurant area because most people gather to binge-drink at the bar.

Yuko Returns Triumphant

Yuko returned from Japan today. While in Japan, she visited the dentist and also did another photography job - photographing a dance festival in Sapporo.

She brought back gifts...

Back in April, Yuko did her first paid photography job - taking pictures in Sydney and Brisbane for a Japanese magazine. On this visit to Japan she obtained a copy of the magazine in which her Sydney and Brisbane photos have just been published. One of Yuko's pictures is the cover photo! Inside, are many more of her pictures illustrating a 20 page feature about what it's like being a Japanese student in Australia.

Visitor from Land of the Long White Sheep

Following our recent visit to the Land of the Long White Sheep, today the Prime Minister of that land paid us a return visit.

In Martin Place, I spotted a shifty little man waiting on the pavement for the Sheep Prime Minister. He looked unusually nervous and shifty.

Sheep Prime Minister arrives as a minder eyes me and wonders if I'm a security risk

There was a ceremony at the Cenotaph which included a wreath laying and speeches by the PM and the shifty guy.

Wreaths laid

I only stayed long enough to hear the PM say something about the Enzec Brdge and that she wanted a statue of a Kiwi installed there or else...

Making speeches

I shot some video of the event, but it turned out to be boring - much like the event. I then had to leave to start work and thus missed the speech by the shifty guy.

In September 2006, Investigate Magazine printed photographs of Davis being kissed or embraced by a "mystery man", who was revealed in other newspapers to be former Labour Party candidate Dr Ian Scott, who ran as an openly gay candidate in the 1981 general election. The magazine appeared to imply that Davis was gay. However, Davis, Clark and Scott deny these allegations, saying that Scott's action was unexpected, spur-of-the-moment joviality during election night celebrations. Clark said the speculation about her husband's sexuality was "completely baseless".[1]

She married sociologist Peter Davis, her partner of five years at that time, shortly before that election (under pressure from some members of the New Zealand Labour Party to marry despite her own feelings about marriage - her biography reports that she cried throughout the ceremony, although she attributes that to a headache).

Sharpening Pencils

Mother is serious about pencils. She needs a sharpener that can handle the high volume of a professional pencil user such as herself. But alas - her electric sharpener stopped functioning a few days ago and I was engaged in the procurement of a new one.

After examining two devices, one priced at $14.95 and the other at $152.95, I chose the former - the iSharpener - so called because it can be powered from a USB port. Mother doesn't have a USB port, but the iSharpener can also operation on batteries.

Yuko Flies Out

Today Yuko flew out. She's going to Japan to see the dentist, and to do another photography job - photographing dancers in Sapporo.

Bags

Today was not a good day to be driving to the airport - it was raining and the traffic was appalling. But I drove Yuko to the airport, dropping her outside the terminal at about 8am. It then took me 70 minutes to get to work in the city.

Fire

There was a fire at Wynyard Station today - closing the station around lunch time. I walked over to gawk and counted seven emergency service vehicles. I later heard that it was a shoe shop that caught fire and that nobody was injured - quite boring.

Tim Tam Trip

Yuko is preparing for another trip to the dentist (in Japan). So naturally, she has to buy up all the Tim Tams she can find...

She also has to take pictures of small objects, so I helped her to set up a tripod to point her camera straight down for this purpose...

Handsome Man

Yuko's favourite pin-up boy was in the paper today...

Yuki Kumagai

We sat outside at Epitome this morning and there was a band performing in the plaza. The singer was quite good and it turned out that she was Japanese, so Yuko said hello to her. He name is Yuki Kumagai.

After they finished playing, she came over to our table and told us about her band. She said they would be playing later in the day at the Manly Food and Wine Festival.

Yuki Kumagai's Band

So we decided to go to the Manly Food and Wine Festival. We had expected free wine tasting, but in fact we had to buy wine glasses for $5.00 each and then pay $5.00 to get wine put in them!

We eventually found Yuki and her band playing in the street. But unfortunately, Yuki was not singing.

Drinking

Being an anti-social bastard, I don't normally socialise with anyone. But after work today I went out drinking with my co-workers for the first time.

Beer

Some of my co-workers in the bar

Eating

After my drunken rampage, I went to meet Yuko for dinner at the Japanese restaurant Akaneya. We were surprised at how crowded it was, but it was due to a big group of Japanese tourists who were occupying two very long tables in the centre of the restaurant.

Then Yuko forced me to wear one of her watches...

Time passes twice as fast when you're drinking

As we walked back to my car, the Moon was rising over the GPO clock tower...

Moon and Clock

Whenever Yuko meets me somewhere after work, we naturally use both cars. The problem is that we nearly always arrive home in my car and only then remember that we've forgotten to go and get Yuko's car. Incredibly, tonight I remembered to exit the freeway at Artarmon to pick up Belinda...
