Driving
Although the drive to work is long, the traffic (at least today) was not bad and the other commuters looked happy...
|
|
Coffee
Although there is no coffee picture today, this was only due to logistical issues which are beyond the scope of this blog. However, I did drink coffee and it was good!
Working
I worked.
Home
Then I went home. It was just getting dark as I left work...
Pole and tree as I departed for home |
Then I drove home, but it was just blur...

|
Tomorrow Mother has to go to a place at Eastwood for XX XXXXXXXXXX As she was not familiar with the route, she asked me to drive her over there beforehand so that she could learn how to get there.
As it was the only time available, we went tonight. It was a good thing too because when we got over there, the street where our destination was located was closed for roadworks in several locations. This complicated the route a lot! I drove back and forth several times over the last few blocks of the route and forced Mother to direct me. She seemed to have it memorised quite well, but she still made one mistake - telling me to turn left instead of right - on the return trip.
In the evening, Yuko gave be a bull on a stick...

This morning I got up early to take Belinda to the doctor for her regular checkup. I left Belinda at the doctor and then walked home. It took about 45 minutes to walk home and it started raining quite heavily when I got about half way. I was soaked when I got home.
I assumed Yuko would still be asleep, so entered the house quietly. But as I reached the doorway to the hall, Yuko, having just got up, crashed into me, scaring us both. We screamed in unison. Then Yuko told me I should apologise for scaring her - but I didn't.
|
|
Later, the doctor called me to say that Belinda had a few problems which ought to be attended to. I agreed to the additional surgery - but the final bill came to a figure which I dare not repeat. We certainly refrained from mentioning it to Mother lest the shock be too much for her.
Yuko gave me a shopping list and I went shopping for things I won't be able to buy for the rest of the week. Included on the list were three comets.
Fish man retrieves comets |
For dinner we went to Taiki with Mother.
|
|
Mother with prawns |
And thus, our Epitome-frequenting, coffee-sipping, paper-reading, bush-walking, chess-playing, picture-taking, garden-watering, pizza-eating lifestyle... ends!
At the risk of shocking regular readers, I must now reveal that tomorrow, I will go to work. That means no Epitome!
However, I have good reason to believe that coffee will be obtainable.

Doyles' coffee - Not up to Epitome's standard! |
The following shocking image depicts the aftermath of an event - perhaps a deliberate act of rampant destruction - which took place in the otherwise peaceful neighbourhood from which this very blog emanates...
We went to the Sydney Fish Market to buy (and eat) fish and to photograph birds.
Fish Market |
We had lunch at Doyles.
Fish (prior to being eaten) |
We photographed each other with our respective cameras...
|
|
After lunch, Yuko took pictures of birds...
Pelican (by Yuko) |
Gull (by Yuko) |
Then, as we were walking back to the car, we remembered that we'd forgotten to buy fish! So Yuko went back and bought fish.

In the morning I found an envelope which had been pushed under our door by the Salvation Army. But when I opened it, I found that it was empty!
|
|
Although we have no child, we went to Luna Park.

|
|
Of course, the main purpose of the outing was for Yuko to take pictures. The following picture is not one of them, but the one after that is.

We went to Lane Cove at the crack of dawn (10.30am) to meet long-time blog reader Laughing Mole at Epitome. At such an hour, we were the only ones in the carpark...
Belinda alone in the carpark |
Mr. Mole and Yuko compared cameras. Mr. Mole's was bigger...
We discovered that while Mr. Mole's lens fitted Yuko's camera, Yuko's lens did not fit Mr. Mole's camera. Perhaps a backward/forward compatibility issue.

Yuko used Mr. Mole's own camera to take the following picture of him. I think he's just a tad under-exposed, but the background came out very well...

There was no coffee today! |
Today I went to Liverpool - home of the Beatles - or the beetles - or something. At least I saw a couple of Volkswagens!
It took a long time to get there so I didn't have time to have real coffee today - hence today's (absence of) coffee picture.
By chance I discovered that they have big chess board in the plaza. This might be a good place to tout my wares (ChesSOS). Unfortunately I didn't bring any advertising materials with me as I did not anticipate a congregation of chess players.

While I was there I took the opportunity to take another look at the house in Christie Street where I lived until the age of 16. Last time I went past it, there was a "For Lease" sign outside. Now it's for sale. I will have to find out how much they're asking for it so that I can lament my parents' selling it in 1979 for the equivalent of a handful of magic beans.

There was a free flag with the newspaper today. It represents some kind of sporting event. Yuko waved it on the balcony at Epitome...
In the afternoon we went to Shelly Beach, which Yuko calls "Skeleton Beach". This is because a skeleton was found there a few years ago. Skeleton Beach is along a bit from the Ocean beach at Manly.
Skeleton Beach |
Yuko on Beach |
We walked along to Manly and attempted to obtain food at the Toilet Restaurant - the establishment which is built on top of the toilet block overlooking the ocean. But their kitchen was closed.
We took note of the trees along the shoreline at Manly. We have a small tree in our back yard which resembles these trees. We have been wondering if it is the same type and whether ours will reach this size...
Manly Tree |
We walked back to Skeleton Beach and drank coffee as we watched the Sun setting (see second coffee picture at top).

Through the kitchen window this morning, I observed the scene below - a mynar bird pecking the barbecue grill clean of corn residue.

The Return of the Tawny Frogmouth
When we got home from Mother's house, there was a Tawny Frogmouth sitting on the fence beside our driveway. I stopped the car in the driveway and Yuko took some pictures from the car.
Tawny Frogmouth |
We last saw the beakless bird way back in April last year. I first thought it was a kookaburra with its beak torn off, but it was later identified by Laughing Mole as a Tawny Frogmouth.

In the evening, Yuko made fire. Normally this fire would be used to cook a barbecue dinner. But tonight it was used only for a cob of corn.
Fire |
After the fire was made, Yuko decided that there was not enough light to take pictures of the corn cooking. So I was forced to help her carry the fiery crucible by hand from the back yard to the front - climbing over the fallen tree on the way.
We completed the operation without setting anything important on fire, and the corn was photographed...

We went to Epitome in the afternoon.
Yuko and Andy (Epitome's Manager) |
With the recent law changes regarding smoke detectors, I decided to check our two devices. I do test them occasionally, but the thing that surprises me is that although I've never replaced the batteries (in 12 years), they both still work! I assume they are running on mains power.

But they do have batteries, and when I took them off the ceiling they still worked, so the batteries were still good.
Despite this, I put new batteries in both detectors.

Then today Yuko made some nice pasta sauce for Mother and I took it over to her. Yuko denied that this was a bribe or a sauce-for-music deal of any kind. The sauce was just a gift with no strings attached.
Mother did however send back one half of the CD set for our listening pleasure on the condition that no copyright laws would be broken. Yuko was happy and surprised...

At abut 2am, I heard a scrunching, crashing, rustling, sound outside the bedroom window. It sounded like someone was jumping over the fence and crashing into our garden. But it wasn't.
I was a tree crashing to the ground...

My cousin Russell had organised a lunch for his family and ours at The Black Stump at North Sydney. We met them there at 1pm.

Surprisingly for Mothers' Day, the restaurant was not crowded. We attribute this to its location in the heart of North Sydney which is fairly quiet on weedends.

The Mothers of Intention were playing in the plaza this morning...
MOI |
While out walking I finally found the site of the fire which prompted the police to come calling on May 4th.
The cop had said it was in Tambourine Bay Reserve, but I couldn't see any evidence of it when I went down there. But today I found it on the side of the hill at the edge of the College grounds. It was much bigger than I expected.
Fire site |
Shortly after finding the fire site, Yuko called me on the mobile. She said Mother had called and was locked out of her house!
I cut short my walk and made my way to Mother's house to rescue her. When I arrived she was waiting outside with her friend Jan. They had just returned from an outing. Mother had her key, but could not unlock the door with it.
Mother and Jan |
So I gave it a try and opened the door easily! The problem was that Mother had accidentally deadlocked the door - not even knowing that it could be deadlocked. So it just required an extra full turn of the key.

Yuko bought a red coat...
Mother's VCR (the new one that she bought on March 28th) has been giving her problems.
The picture was just bad - whether playing a tape or just watching the tuner image. So today I went to her place and took the machine home to test it before calling LG service.
Mother's VCR |
I connected it to a TV and fired it up and lo... it worked fine...
Then I realised the one thing I had forgotten to check at Mother's house - the TV tuning. Mother's TV has no A/V inputs so the VCR goes into the antenna input the old-fashioned way. It turned out that the channel tuning on her TV was the problem. I adjusted it and all was well.
When I returned from my daily walk, there was a dude in a uniform milling around out side our house. He got into a vehicle before I reached the front gate, but I saw on the side of his car that he was an RSPCA inspector.
Then, after I went inside he came up our driveway and I saw him looking over the fence into our neighbours' back yard. He must have been interested in the living conditions of our neighbours' two dogs which are confined to their back yard most of the time.

The daymaking and flattening machines outside our house came to life this evening. I went out into the dark cold night to gawk. They appeared to be re-surfacing the roundabout. I hadn't noticed any problem with the original surface... but I guess it keeps people in work.

Today we got dressed up for the wedding of Mink and Gerrard. Belinda also got spruced up for the event. Mink is a blogger, which is how Yuko got to know her.
|
|
Although the wedding was scheduled for 4pm, we had other duties to perform starting at 1pm. First we went to a hotel in the city to photograph the bride. Then, the whole party headed to The Rocks for some touristy photos with Sydney landmarks in the background.
Of course there was a professional photographer taking the pictures, but Yuko tagged along too. Mink wanted Yuko to take additional pictures so that she could use them on her blog immediately rather than waiting for the professional shots.
One of Yuko's pictures is now posted on Mink's Blog.

The happy couple emerged from the church and lots of pictures were taken. Then they jumped into a red Ferrari...

The reception was held at the American Club which is in Macquarie Street. It was a nice venue - just the right size for this function of about 50 people.
Small person frolicking at the reception |
We were impressed with the food. The four courses were all excellent...
|
|
|
|
Of course speeches were made - some in English and some in Japanese. Several references were made in the speeches to Mink's Blog.
|
|
It was a long tiring day even though we were only guests! We therefore decided that we will only attend an event like this once every ten years. But despite this, a jolly time was had by all!

Today I plumbed.
The pipe exiting out water meter has been leaking. I called our plumber about it, but although he answered the phone, he said he was on holidays. He advised me to try tightening the nut myself. I took his advice, and reduced the flow to a slow drip.

Further to yesterday's fire story, I walked over to Blackman park today to gawk at the scout hall which the Herald reported destroyed by fire. However, when I arrived the scout hall appeared completely intact. I didn't take a picture as there was a security dude outside and I didn't want to become a suspect.
I walked a little further into the park and discovered that there is (or was) a second hall - the Guide hall. It's partly hidden in the bushes and I have never noticed its existence before today. However, its existence had now come to an end at the hands of the North Shore fire bug!
The site was crawling with men wearing uniforms of some kind so again I decided not to take pictures.
The wedding is tomorrow... so Yuko bought a card...
Mother invited us for dinner. Yuko and Mother got into a fight about the nature of good and evil when Yuko questioned Mother Teresa's motives for her good deeds.

At about 3am, Yuko woke me (well I wasn't actually asleep) to tell me that NHK (The Japanese TV channel) was reporting a Tsunami warning in the South Pacific. As we are located in that part of the world, I thought it was a cause for concern.
An 8.1 quake near Tonga had triggered the warning but despite the sophisticated monitoring system they have in the Pacific, nobody could say whether a tsunami had actually been generated.
Eventually, about two hours after the quake, the news people contacted people in Fiji by phone. They said they had not experienced a tsunami. So it seems that they have to wait until the wave reaches a populated area before they know if there is really a tsunami or not!
|
|
While I was making breakfast, the police knocked on our door. They said there had been a fire down in Tambourine Bay reserve at about 3am and wanted to know if we had seen or heard anything. I said we hadn't. Although the cop only mentioned one fire, the SMH website reported that there were THREE fires in the Lane Cove area last night.
This seems to be another episode in the series which includes the Boatshed fire a few weeks ago.

hi guys,
we have just checked out your pages and noticed there is no photos of Natalie on it and it is her birth day today. i would like to formally place the request to place a big photo of her at your next convenience.

Every time we tell Mother that we've been to Collaroy, she freaks out because she thinks we mean Cronulla - the home of race riots. The mistake is understandable as they both start with "C" and have "ll" in them.
Today we went to Collaroy - not Cronulla - so we were not expecting a riot, but there was a riot.

There was a school group on a surfing excursion...
The disturbance started when we saw two superheroes in a face off. The police got involved to calm the situation...

Then a riot started so we ran away... but not before taking this picture...
