Fire

On Tuesday night, the boatshed down at Burns Bay was destroyed by fire. It belongs to Sydney University and I first learned of the fire when I saw it on the TV news on Wednesday.

Today I went down to gawk at the smoldering ruins...

Balmoral

In the evening, we went to Balmoral. When we were half way there, Yuko realised she'd forgotten her camera battery. This meant she could not take pictures, but I still had my "toy" camera.

Yuko's battery still on the charger

We bought takeaway at the Thai restaurant and went down to the beach. By that time (7.20pm), it was already dark.

When Keiko's parents were in Australia in December, her father wanted to take a picture of the Southern Cross. However, it was not is a favourable position at that time and I was given the task of taking the picture for him when it's in a better position in the sky. Tonight at Balmoral, I noticed that the cross was at a reasonable altitude so I took a couple of test shots with my toy camera. I'll try it with Yuko's fancy camera at a later date.

ChesSOS

While preparing to film a movie entitled A Night in Casablanca, the Marx brothers received a letter from Warner Bros. threatening legal action if they did not change the film's title. Warner Bros. deemed the film's title too similar to their own Casablanca, released almost five years earlier in 1942, with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

I am now in a similar position with ChesSOS.

Another chess organisation apparently thinks I'm encroaching on their turf and have complained about my use of a particular word in the following advertisement which I have running on the Australian Chess Federation web site. Guess which word...

Regarding A Night in Casablanca, the story is here.

Printer

I had to print an important document today, and the printer had run out of Magenta ink! So I walked to Lane Cove to buy some more - thus getting exercise and merchandise at the same time. The levels of Light Magenta, Cyan and Light Cyan were also low, so I bought all four. I was surprised that they were only $8 each - last time they were $12 at the same shop.

We have received an invitation to the wedding of [Name Omitted] and [Name Omitted]. It's on May 6th, which could be a problem, as we were expecting to be out of the country at that time. However, Yuko might stay in Sydney a bit longer so that she can go to the wedding without me.

Mother's VCR

The guy from JAG Electronics called me a couple of days ago to tell me that Mother's VCR is dead... or at least too far gone to be worth fixing.

So today I took her to Macquarie Centre to buy a new one. She got an LG machine for the disgustingly low price of $116.

After buying the machine, Mother shouted lunch at De Malaya (which we still call "33").

Head Shots

In 1986 I went to a photographic shop in Lane Cove called Leicamat to pick up some prints. Today I went back there to get a set of passport photos taken.

I told the woman there that I had been there 20 years earlier, but she didn't remember me.

Fujiko

Yuko gave me one task in the evening - to install her camera software on Fujiko. She needs to be able to blog in remote locations.

Coffee

The latest on coffee...

I read in the paper of a cappuccino war which is going on in Sydney. I told the Epitome waiter to be careful of bands of thugs roaming from cafe to cafe forcing them to change coffee brands. He said he'd tell the manager.

Mother

In Mother's garage, there are some shelves with glass jars on them which have bee gradually sagging and getting close to the point of disastrous collapse.

Auction and Mole

This morning we went to the Auction of the house that we looked through on Wednesday. Blog reader Laughing Mole also attended...

Auction - Mole visible at front of house

Yuko is usually very good at estimating house prices. Before the auction started, she estimated the price at $1.6M.

There were no bidders initially. Then there was a vendor's bid of $1.3M. Two bidders then began bidding, as bidders do. When it got to $1.4M I urged Laughing Mole to jump in, but he held back. It was a slow process, but the house eventually sold for $1.411M.

After the auction we proceeded to Epitome. Mr. Mole generously shouted us using the proceeds of his recently sold Cochlear share and the recent dividend (for which he received a cheque).

We discussed a range of topics including [Name Omitted], [Name Omitted] and those [Expletive Deleted] [Expletive Deleted] [Name Omitted],

We also discussed my XXXXX XXXXXXXX XXX XX XXXXXXX the geography of XXX XXXXX XXX XXXXX XXXXXXX XX XXX XXXXXXX and nakedness.

Laughing Mole at Epitome

Man in Black

In the afternoon we went to see a movie with Mother.

The movie was Walk the Line.

It's the story of a boy who kills his brother by negligence. He lies down on the bed, and when he wakes up he's an adult.

He then embarks on a career as a singer/drug taker who drives a tractor on the side. He's married to a woman who hates his guts and later, he asks another woman, who also hates his guts to marry him too. Although she hates his guts, she marries him so that the words of the song they're singing will make sense.

Then he goes to prison and makes a recording of it which turns out to be more popular than his music. Then he dies.

We all thought it was crap.

After the movie, we had dinner at Kibune, a small Japanese restaurant at Neutral Bay. It was good.

ChesSOS

I spent most of the day working on adding a printable version of the board to ChesSOS. In the process, I learned two things:
First, most browsers don't print backgrounds in table cells by default. Second, even when you enable printing of backgrounds, Firefox doesn't understand that transparent gifs are transparent when printing - so the backgrounds are hidden by the transparent bits!

As a result of not knowing these facts, my printed output was less than adequate...

All squares are white

It looks fine on the screen and it even comes out looking ok in IE after you turn on background printing - but you have to go into the advanced settings to do that!

I released it despite the fact that it doesn't work in Firefox. To fix it properly I'll need to get some special chess piece graphics for the print-view. No transparent gifs!

Epitome

After a hard day's programming (and blogging in Yuko's case), we went for afternoon coffee at Epitome. We sat outside (see coffee picture at top), but it got too cold and we had to move to an inside table.

Yuko carrying her salad bowl inside

Yuko finally paid me for my hair cutting services. She saved $17 by engaging my services rather than her regular cutter.

The Gap

In the afternoon, we went to Watsons Bay. As usual, the main purpose of the outing was for Yuko to take pictures for her blog.

We walked up to The Gap. A sign indicated the correct procedure to follow...

Instructions for gap usage

Unlike Collaroy, dogs are not prohibited - they're totally prohibited. I'm unsure of the difference.

Yuko took pictures of the Gap...

...and of North Head...

On South Head we saw evidence of the gun emplacements which had existed there in the past to defend Sydney Harbour against invaders who might try to enter through the heads. I told Yuko that the only invaders who have ever tried it were the Japanese in 1942. She became interested in the details, and later I had to google some information about it for her.

The story of the Japanese Midget Submarines is here and here.

A sign told us that we were surrounded by Aboriginal rock carvings. After a brief search, we found one.

Sign indicating carvings

Aboriginal carving - circa 1781.

Doyles

There's only one place to eat at Watsons Bay - Doyles. Although there is also Doyles, and Doyles and a pub.

Yuko - Doyles in background

As the sun was quite low in the sky, we decided that the tables at Doyles were too sunny (as can be seen in the picture above). So we went to Doyles instead.

Doyles - Yuko is in the center of the frame by the railing

It was a very good time to go to Doyles (6pm) as it was almost empty. The last time we were here there was a long queue to get in and we eschewed it.

After leaving Doyles we walked over to have a look at Doyles. The sun had gone down by this time so the tables were not so sunny.

Doyles. maybe next time we'll go there instead of Doyles.

Rain

In the evening, it rained. Here's a picture of it...

House

There are two streets in Riverview with very similar names. In fact the only difference is that one is in a bold font and one is normal...

In one of these streets, there is a house for sale. It was open for inspection today, so we decided to look through it.

Yuko took her toy camera (as opposed to the SLR) so that she could take pictures secretly...

Although it was nice in parts, we didn't like it much. Despite this, we might go to the auction this weekend.

I got an email from the webmaster of another Chess site - Pawnstorm - which is a competitor of ChesSOS.

Apparently some of his users had mentioned to him that they were beta-testing my site as well as his... and after a bit of detective work, he discovered that I was also registered on his site as a beta tester! So my jig was up!

But he was very nice, wishing me luck with my endeavour.

Spilled Milk

Last night, when I was showing Mother some photos on the computer, I knocked over a glass of milk and it spilled all over the table cloth. Dixie also got slightly wet, but appeared to suffer no ill effects. I apologise to readers for failing to photograph the milk as it lay in pools across the table.

So I had to wash the cloth in the bath (it's too delicate for the machine), and it takes at least a day to dry, so Dixie is now sitting on a towel...

Again, I took almost no photos today, other than the coffee picture above. I might be suffering from photographer's block.

Free Day

Yuko went out today to have a long lazy lunch with Keiko in the city. So I had free time.

For part of my free time I went to Epitome with Dixie and worked on ChesSOS while sipping coffee.

ChesSOS continues to attract a trickle of new members (3 today) and I'm amazed that some of them have come from other well-established and more feature-rich sites. They seem to think ChesSOS is comparable.

Moon (III)

Again it was cloudy and the moon was not visible, so again we didn't go to Collaroy. I think the window for moon viewing this month has now passed. Specifically, Yuko wants to photograph the near-full moon rising over the ocean at dusk so there's only a couple of days per lunation when those conditions occur. We'll now have to wait until April.

Moon (I)

It's almost full moon!

Yuko has wanted to photograph the moon rising over the ocean for some time. As the moon was due to rise at 6.35pm today, 45 minutes before sunset, we decided to go over to Collaroy to take pictures.

We found a spot near the ocean pool with a panoramic view of the eastern horizon and waited for the moon to appear.

Yuko's viewing location

Shooting

Unfortunately, it was a bit cloudy, obscuring the moon near the horizon so we didn't see it come up out of the sea. However, we did see it a few degrees above the horizon through a gap in the clouds.

It was not very adequate. So we plan to return tomorrow when the sky will be a bit darker at moonrise.

Animal

As we walked back to the car, we spotted an animal traversing the carpark. In the low light we first thought it was a huge rat. But we followed it into the bushes and saw it climb a tree. Then we could see that it was only a possum. Our attempts to photograph it had limited success...

When got up this morning I was surprised to find that seven new members had registered on ChesSOS since last night. This is in contrast to the slow trickle of registrations up until now (about one per week).

I then checked my email and discovered that the weekly ACF email newsletter had arrived, and it had a blurb about my site, including the big logo. A web copy is here.

I'm not sure how many people get this newsletter, but it was certainly effective. By the end of the day I had 19 new members! And they all started playing games with each other... and they seemed to enjoy it!

Then I got some bug reports... and I started to panic...

But there were no serious problems, and I got some good feedback from some of the new players. On the financial side, my advertising revenue surged past $1.00 (that's US dollars).

A productive day indeed.

Radio

Yuko has been using the FM radio built into her new mobile phone...

Dancing to the beat

Then, she forced me to take the picture below with her SLR camera to check whether her hair was shiny enough.

Darkness

Today was the second hottest day this year with the temperature reaching 35C. In the evening I moved a TV and computer to the back patio and stayed there until it was quite dark.

Note the "Yellow" logo

Yellow

Today, in a disgusting act of disloyalty, we had breakfast at a cafe other than Epitome!

We went to Yellow...

Yellow

This was partly because of our difficulty in connecting to the Internet from Epitome. Yuko said we should try another place in the hope of getting a better signal. At Yellow, I was able to connect but Yuko was not.

The food was adequate, but I don't think Epitome has anything to worry about.

Weapons Classes

Here is a local Scout hall...

I was shocked to learn the kinds of activities they are encouraging among our young people. When I was a scout it was all about tying knots and starting fires...

Phones

The thing I hate about getting a new mobile phone, is the transferring of all the contacts from the old phone to the new one. On past occasions, I have done this by copying the contacts to s SIM card and copying from the SIM to the new phone.

I actually borrowed Mother's phone today, to use its SIM for this purpose (as she's not using the SIM memory), but it didn't work.

Unfortunately, our old phones don't have SIM cards. Not only that, but the SIM card slot, although it exists, is non-functional. I concluded this after reading the sticker on it which says "card slot non-functional" and because when I put a SIM in it, it didn't function.

So I've started keying in all the contacts manually!

Too many phones

Excitement

The latter part of the day was very exciting.

Wireless

At Epitome, we attempted to connect to the Internet using our new phones as wireless modems. It didn't work.

This does not necessarily mean that there's something wrong. The porting or our mobile service across to "3" has not fully kicked in yet. Last night I was able to make calls but not receive calls. Then, later I couldn't make calls either. So there could be some dodgyness in the changeover period which affects both voice and data connections.

Day of Gay

Pink!

We went to the Gay Mardi Gras in 1993, and decided that once was enough. Not because we didn't like the parade, but because you have to get there very early to claim a good vantage point and then wait for hours before it starts.

So today we decided to just go and observe the pre-parade activities. Most of the pictures here were taken by Yuko.

We parked in the multi-level carpark in Goulburn St. Before returning to our car, we went to one of the upper levels where we had a good view of Elizabeth Street where some of the parade floats were waiting before the start of the parade.

Didn't you notice your alien buddy was sending some transmissions to outer space while you were at Epitome? Maybe his interplanetary coms got in the way of your reception? I would like to apologize for not bringing your alien a coffee (does he have a name?)

Accidental Purchase of Two Wireless Modems

Today we purchased (although we didn't pay anything) two wireless broadband modems without even realising it!

Almost two years ago we signed up for a two-year mobile phone contract with Orange (which included two phones). As our contract had almost expired, they sent us a letter begging us to stay with their network (which is now "3") for another year. To entice us to comply, they offered us two new phones and a plan with the same monthly charge as the one we're already on. As it doesn't cost any extra (in theory), we decided to get the new phones, so today we visited the "3" shop at St. Leonards.

This parking area at St. Leonards Station used to be always full. But now they've installed a ticket machine!

Moments after taking the picture above, I got a call from XXXXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXX XX XXXXXXX XX XXXXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXX XX XXXXXXX XX XXXX

The "3" shop at St. Leonards.

We had a look at the phone. It's a tad bigger than our existing phones, but much more nifty. While the shop dude was taking our details, I got another call, this time from XXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX XX XXXXXX XX XX XXXX XXX X XXXXXX XXXXX XXX XXX X XXXXXXX XXXX XX XXXXXXXX XX XXX XXX XX XXXXXXXX

There was a small debacle which threatened to thwart our plan...

Our existing mobile account was in Yuko's name, so the dude asked her for her mother's maiden name to verify the account. However, the name she gave was not correct. Nor could she remember the PIN number for the account (as we've never needed it since choosing it two years ago). So we we stuck.

Then the guy asked me to guess the PIN number - and I guessed it on the first try! Then I realised that the account verification details must have been mine rather than Yuko's. So I told him Mother's maiden name and it was correct!

After leaving the "3" shop we had coffee at Olio, a cafe at St. Leonards Station...

Later, when reading the blurb about the phone, I learned that the phone is also a wireless broadband modem. I tried it and was able to connect to the Internet with it. However, the download speed seemed a bit on the slow side to be called "broadband", and the pricing may be a bit on the high side to use it for anything but occasional access.

Walk

I went walking in the afternoon and stumbled upon the scene of a tree massacre...

Surprise Vito

In the morning we were woken by the sound of a whipper-snipper. I thought it was next door, but then I glanced out the window and saw Vito (our gardener) in out back yard. This was odd because we were not expecting him. Despite this, Yuko had him working for four hours!

Bendy Aliens

In the afternoon I went to Crows Nest and bought some bendy aliens.

Your life is exceedingly dull ... but I am strangely drawn to read about it. I think it is so it makes me feel good about my own dull life. Keep up the good work !!

Printer

Time to change the printer cartridge. I like having a separate cartridge for each colour ink...

Walk

In the afternoon, we went for a walk together. Usually we go separately because we can't coordinate our walking times, but today we were both ready to go at the same time.

ABC Anomaly

In the evening I turned on the TV to watch The 7.30 Report on the ABC. I was a bit surprised to see that the news was still on at 7.35pm. Then I noticed that it was actually the South Australian edition of the news. I assumed that there had been some technical problem with the NSW news, so they had taken a feed from SA. Of course SA is 30 minutes behind NSW which explained the odd time.

Then I wandered into the bedroom and turned on the TV in there. Strangely, The 7.30 Report was screening there, while the news was still showing in the living room!

The difference was that the TV in the living room was connected to Optus cable, while the one in the bedroom was getting its signal from an ordinary antenna. Normally the two are identical.

For the rest of the evening, the cable signal lagged the broadcast signal by half an hour. I assume it was the South Australian signal all evening.
