To bring the queen out... or not to bring the queen out...

Teriyaki Boy

Yuko had some strange fruit thing to give Keiko, so she suggested we go to Keiko's place at Balmain to drop it in, and then have dinner at the nearby Teriyaki Boy.

Keiko was wearing a funny hat

Keiko receives funny jarred fruit

Then we continued on to the main drag at Balmain...

Balmain

But when we arrived at Teriyaki Boy it was full - and we hadn't booked. So we walked along the road looking for food... and after passing many interesting food sources... we found... La Lupa...

La Lupa

It was in an old heritage building in the "back yard" of another old building. We sat up on the mezzanine level.

The inside of La Lupa

La Lupa The Menu

We had the Pasta Special - choice of a pasta dish, with garlic bread and a glass of wine for $20. It was quite good value, and everything was big - even the glass of wine.

Yuko recorded everything in excessive detail...

On the way back to the car, we learned the shocking news that The White House has been sold! That will be a nice commission for someone at Ray White...

I should have used flash for this picture, but it really is The White House

Helen Arrives

Yuko's new computer (to be called Helen) was due to be delivered today between 12 and 4pm. However, by 3.30pm it had not arrived and Yuko was becoming agitated. She wanted to call Dell and abuse them, but I told her to relax.

At 3.45pm, Dell called her and said the delivery would be at 5pm. It arrived just after 5pm.

Helen arrives at the front door

Yuko dragged the box inside...

Dragging Helen

I unpacked all the bits and began connecting cables and stuff...

It booted up...

And a naming ceremony was held...

But that's about all we could do.

We have to get Japanese Windows installed on the machine before Yuko can really start using it. And the wireless network card - which is needed for the Internet connection - won't be delivered until Wednesday.

Installing Japanese Windows is not something I want to try. It's bad enough when the prompts are in English...

So Yuko called a Japanese Computer Man whose contact details she got from a flyer on a notice board at a Japanese shop. He will come on Wednesday (assuming we get the network card), and set up the machine as a dual boot system (English and Japanese).

Open Air Cinema

In the evening we went to the St. George Open Air Cinema in the Botanic Gardens. It was our fifth time - but for the first time, we took Mother. Mother's friend Jan also came along.

We went over by car and I dropped Mother, Jan and Yuko near the entrance. I then went looking for a parking space. The parking situation at Mrs. Macquarie's Point is pretty bleak. It's parking meters all the way with not an empty space in sight, so we usually park in a parking station at Woolloomooloo.

But as I was heading towards Mrs. Macs chair, I spotted a car pulling out. I grabbed the space only about 50 metres from the cinema. Then, I got lucky again... the parking meter was broken! So, it was free!

Mother and Jan at the open air cinema

We took food to eat before the movie started.

Simple food - Chicken on a bread roll

Chicken in foil

Free chocolate was handed out at the entrance.

Dessert

The screen rose at about 8.30pm...

Screen Rises

The movie we saw was Mad Hot Ballroom - a documentary.

We only chose that film because when I ordered the tickets three weeks ago, it was the only film that I'd heard of that wasn't sold out.

It's the story of a three groups of primary school kids who are lured into the seedy, cut-throat world of ballroom dancing by their ruthless teachers who are motivated by an unhealthy lust for a gold-plated trophy.

We all liked it.

Mother's Car Lock

Today, I woke up early (8am) and walked around to Mother's house, and took her car to the locksmith.

I went to the locksmith where we bought our front door lock, in this little group of shops in Mowbray road...

The tiny shopping village in Mowbray Road

They said the job would take a couple of hours, so I left the car with them and walked home. I decided to walk back via the famed Information Superhighway...

This involved crossing the bridge of steel which spans Epping Road...

Bridge of Steel

There was something odd about Epping Road. I thought maybe I had crossed into a parallel universe...

Epping road in the parallel universe

When the car was ready, they called me. I then picked Mother up and we went there in our car.

The lock man said that the little dust cover on the key-hole had broken off and gone inside the lock. That's why the key wouldn't go in. It only cost $135, which wasn't too bad.

Mother gets her car back

Anniversary

Today is our 13th anniversary!

So after Mother's car lock was fixed, we went to celebrate at Epitome...

Congratulations

Talking Clock

Yuko has had this talking clock for a long, long time...

Talking clock

When you press its "nose", it tells you the time in Japanese. It also has an alarm which wakes you up by yelling something like "wake up you idiot" in Japanese.

Recently Yuko decided to use it, but found that it didn't work. So, as I have something of a background in electronics, she thrust it in my face and told me to fix it!

Yuko thrusts the talking clock in my face.

I took it apart and prodded aimlessly at the circuit board. Suddenly, the device said "wake up you idiot!" (in Japanese). So I put back together, and it didn't work.
So I took it apart, and it worked.
So I put back together, and it didn't work.
So I took it apart, and it worked.
So I put back together, and it didn't work.
So I told Yuko to throw it away...

Clock in pieces

Yuko took it away and did something to it, and now it works!

Coffee Maker Debuts

I used the new Bodum coffee maker for the first time today. I tried it with the supplied filter rather than our glass thingy. It works fine, but getting it out later is a hassle.

Coffee is made

Australia Day

In the afternoon we went to the city by ferry.

Ferry

We found a nice open air cafe across the road from the Quay where we had a small lunch.

Yuko at the open air cafe

Being patriotic, we drank Dutch beer. After all, Australia was formerly known as New Holland.

Dutch Beer for "New Holland Day"

We both ordered bruschetta. It was the smallest bruschetta we've ever seen! But it was also the best...

Tiny Bruschetta (but nice)

There was a retro theme happening with the buses. I guess this is what the buses looked like when Captain Phillip arrived in 1788...

Coffee Maker

After I destroyed the coffee maker a couple of weeks ago, we decided we had to make the voyage to Bondi Junction again, as we did almost two years ago, to buy a replacement.

We took the glass thingy along, carefully wrapped for safety, in the hope that we might also find a spare for that.

Glass thingy

We drove over there...

Driving

The Bodum shop is located in Westfield. Incredibly, I didn't get lost on the way.

Inside the Bodum shop (Webslave visible at far left)

We found the machine, and the dude in the shop told us that Bodum in Australia is discontinuing this model due to low sales. Instead, they will only stock an electric model.

We therefore decided to buy all their remaining stock!

Yuko carries out the last two machines in Sydney

After obtaining the coffee makers, we decided to drink coffee. Note that there is a young girl visible in the top-right of the coffee picture at the top of this article.

Soon after taking that picture, the girl's grandmother came over to talk to Yuko. She was interested in Yuko's camera, and said that she was also a photographer.

The girl then demonstrated a bubble-making gadget she was playing with. She put some goo on the end of a little tube, and blew into the tube. It seemed to be something like bubble-gum, but the bubbles are more durable.

Making a bubble

She made three bubbles, stuck them together, and gave them to Yuko to take home.

Bubbles

Then we went home...

Coffee at Eden

Eden Gardens

Mother wanted to buy some gardening related stuff, so she asked me to take her to Sherringhams Nursery.

But then we heard about a big new nursery at North Ryde called Eden Gardens. So we decided to check it out.

Entering Eden

Eden Gardens is a moderately large place with underground parking - much better than the parking situation at Sherringhams. We concluded that Sherringhams will not survive with this competition. We will contribute to driving them out of business by vowing to never go to Sherringhams again!

Statue

Mother bought her gardening supplies and then shouted us coffee (see picture at top) at the in-house cafe (which was more crowded than the garden shop).

The outside bit

Row of tiny Buddhists

Mother's Mirror

Following Mother's mirror crashing incident yesterday, I bought some Araldite and attempted to glue the mirror back in place.

Repair in progress

I used the Business section of the SMH to catch any dripping glue

But now Mother's car has another problem.

I had taken the car to Lane Cove to buy the glue. When I returned to the car, I was unable to unlock the driver's door from the outside. The key just refused to go fully into the lock and I was forced to enter through the passenger door and unlock the driver's door from the inside.

I wonder if someone tampered with the lock while I was shopping! It looks OK, but it might be damaged inside.

Washing Machine Fixed

Yuko was amazed when the washing machine fixer turned up at about 10am, well within the 9-12 window they had told us.

Machine fixer's tools in the laundry

He replaced two switches and charged us $261, but the machine now works, so we are happy. Hand washing sucks!

Machine's innards exposed

Mother Crashes

Mother was driving to the hairdresser this morning, when she got too close to a parked car. Her side mirror hit the side mirror of the parked car, and this was the result...

Mirror dangling

The mirror of the other car was apparently only displaced and might be undamaged. But Mother exchanged details with the car's owner who was nearby at the time.

Mother's mirror was just hanging by some thin wires, and I suggested that it was unwise to drive the car with the mirror dangling like that. So I cut the wires and removed it completely.

We will attempt to glue it back in place tomorrow.

Hawks

Mother took us to Hawks for lunch. It's a place she learned about when she was taken there a few days ago by Betty and Bruce.

It's an "all you can eat" place similar to 33 (De Malaya). However the food was much better and more abundant at Hawks!

Food

Of course, Yuko photographed the food in detail...

It's actually part of the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club and the building looks quite new and shiny.

Mole at Bardeli's

We went to Bardeli's to meet Laughing Mole.

Yuko took a present for the chef, a decorative can. He said he would keep his money in it.

The chef

It was a warm day, and we drank water

We arrived slightly too late for breakfast so we had to have lunch instead.

Food

We talked with L. MOLE about XXX XXXXXXXXXX XX XXX XXXX XXX XXX XXXXXXX XX XXX XXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX We also discussed his connections with XXXX XXX XXX XXX XXXXXXXXX which are actually minimal.

Yuko and Laughing Mole (who does exist)

Afterwards, we went outside and Yuko asked Mr Mole to XXXX XXX XXXXXXXXXX XX XXX XXXX XXX XXXXXX XX XXXX XXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXXX XXX XX XXXXXXX However the results were below expectations and not worthy of publication.

Watering

As it was a warm day, Yuko put a hose in my hand...

And she took the other one...

Sunset Debacles

Yuko wanted to go and take pictures of the sunset with the Harbour Bridge in the background, so we decided to go to Cremorne Point.

The plan was to buy some fish and chips on the way, and eat it by the water before taking some sunset pictures. The Sun was due to set a bit after 8pm, so I suggested we leave around 7pm.

At bout 6pm Yuko went out for a walk (where she took a picture of a dog in the air)...

Dog in the air (includes arse)

... and I fell asleep! When I woke up it was 7:10! We hurried to get ready and left at about 7:20pm.

When we got to Crows Nest, there was traffic chaos as Falcon Street was closed near Miller Street! This caused a significant delay, and all hope of buying food before sunset vanished.

But we made it to Cremorne point in time to see the sunset. The problem was that there was nowhere to park! I dropped Yuko near the wharf where she took some pictures while I drove up and down the street looking for a space. I never found one.

Yuko taking pictures at Cremorne Point

Yuko's picture

Then we decided to go to Balmoral to have fish and chips. But when we got there, the fish shops had just closed. We bought Thai food instead and went down to the park by the beach to eat it. But it was very windy, and it was very difficult to eat while trying all the time to hold down the containers and bags lest they blow away. In addition, by this time it was dark and we couldn't see the food!

Thai food - only visible with flash

Noswonkys in the dark

The logistical problems of eating Thai food in a dark hurricane resulted in us getting sticky sauce all over our hands. We knew there was a tap nearby, as we'd used it before. But alas, it had been hobbled...

Unusable tap

We tried washing our hands in the harbour, but even with the gentle ebb and flow of a harbour beach, we ended up with our shoes swamped with water, and an inadequate hand-washing. Eventually I used Belinda's window washer to wash my hands!

Buying a Computer

To avoid going to a shop and speaking to a sales person, I decided to try one more time to place an on-line order with Dell. This time, it worked...

This gave us some free time, so we went to Epitome for breakfast at about noon.

Walk

As can be seen from this weather vane, it was good weather for walking, so that's what I did.

Good weather

While walking, I saw this house...

Renovator's dream

Kazuki Strikes Again

In the evening, I felt a sharp pain in my foot as I walked across the living room. It was one of Kazuki's fish-hooks embedding itself in my woosy white skin!

As compensation, Yuko gave me a cow-lollipop...

Busyness

As my Busyness has subsided, I hoped that today I would have some time to work on enhancements to my chess site (ChesSOS). But I didn't get to do any work on it, because I was kept busy by the things I'd put on hold due to being busy, which I now had time for.

Among them...

Washing

I called the washing machine maker and they will send a dude on Monday.

But today, I had to wash clothes the old-fashioned way...

Washing

Dell Loses a Customer

With Fifi now dead, today we attempted to buy a computer from Dell. However, after entering all the information to place our order with Dell, we got this message...

We tried again and again and again and again... being forced to re-enter all our details (name, email, address, credit card etc) on every attempt!

Finally, at 1am Yuko said "I don't like it! I will go to the shop!".

Comets

Yuko sent me to Lane Cove to buy comets. The guy in the shop asked me "what's wrong?" But I denied knowledge of the state of our fish stocks.

Comets

Maroo

Yuko needed to buy some Korean groceries. So to make the most of our trip to Eastwood, we decided to take Mother and go to Maroo too.

At Maroo, they have got new tables and new gas cookers...

New dark wood tables and the "Geo Song Roaster"

City

I went to the city again today. However, unlike last last Monday I did not witness any street fights, perhaps because I was at the more civilised end of town.

Taiki

We considered meeting in the city for dinner, but as my business in the city finished quite early, I went home and we went to Taiki instead.

On the bill, they charged us for 250 pieces of sushi at 6 cents each. I didn't remember eating that many - but at least they were cheap!

Blackout

In the afternoon we had a partial blackout (power-points only). It was just a tripped circuit breaker, so I boldly switched it back on...

Circuit breaker

But later, after loading the washing machine, I hit the start switch and lo... Another blackout! I switched on the circuit breaker again, and tried to start the washing machine again, but it was dead!

We realised that the washing machine had been running during the first blackout too. So it seems that an electrical fault in the machine caused the blackouts, and has now rendered the machine inoperative.

Street Fighting

I went to the city in the afternoon on a business matter. While there, I saw pigeons...

Pigeons

I also witnessed a street fight between a taxi driver and a man who presumably had been his passenger.

I arrived while the incident was already in progress.

Taxi driver and red/white guy on the road.

The taxi driver had abandoned his cab in the middle of the road and was on the footpath fighting with the red/white striped guy over the possession of a black bag. A security guard from the adjacent bank was attempting to keep the situation under control.

Left to right - Taxi driver (fist clenched), fur-wearing woman, self-proclaimed bag owner, bank security guard.

The two links below are videos of the incident. I don't have time to edit them so they are raw from the camera. The first one is not very good as I had the zoom set too narrow. The second shows the fight over the bag quite well, including the fur-wearing woman kicking the taxi driver. She appeared to be with the red/white guy.

Fifi Comes Home - Dead

While in the city (actually Surry Hills) I stopped at Laptop.com.au to pick up Fifi. As I mentioned a few days ago, Fifi was booked for surgery to have her motherboard replaced. But when, after a three month wait, the new board arrived from Dell, it was also faulty! So Fifi never got her transplant and came home in a box!

Loveplay

Loveplay is a play being produced by The Factory Space Fringe Theatre. It is a darkly hilarious journey through 2000 years of desire in all its many disguises.

Tonight, Yuko went to take publicity photos of the actors. I also went along as her assistant (and I took some pictures with my toy camera too).

Thanks to blog reader [Name Omitted] who arranged this through his contacts in the fringe theatre community. He warned us that it might be a bit risque, so as the three of us arrived at the location I asked him "will the actors be naked?" He said he didn't think so... but he was wrong!

As there was still some daylight, we first took some shots on an outdoor set.

We didn't know anything about the storyline, but as the play is a Mardi Gras Festival event, it was not surprising that there were gay themes...

When we got home we had several hundred photos to sift through, which kept us busy for the rest of the evening. We picked out the best ones, and did some cropping and digital editing.

I think we will have to go and see Loveplay.

Coffee

After destroying the coffee maker a couple of day ago, I now have to use these primitive plungers to make coffee for breakfast...

Primitive coffee equipment

Mother's Phones

When Kazuki was here, we borrowed one of Mother's mobile phones for him to carry in case he got lost. I erased all Mother's numbers and just programmed the numbers Kazuki might need.

But now Mother wants to use that phone again, so today I went through the list of numbers in one phone and programed them into the other.

Photography

Yuko photographed some yellow food with her fancy camera...

ChesSOS

The rest of the day I spent working on ChesSOS. I probably did a full 8-hour day of work on it and added one feature. It seems to take about one day to add each new feature.

Also, last night a new user registered. This is the first user who has registered, without me knowing who it is. This must be the result of my massive advertising blitz.

Heart

As we were unable to view the Heart on New Year's Eve due to having a child at the time, and as it was turned off on the night we went to Luna Park, we went to look at it tonight.

First we went to Blues Point, and although the heart was on the far side of the bridge, it was a good view.

The Heart

We took two tripods and both photographed the scene with our respective cameras.

Then we went to Milsons point to see the heart from the front. Just as we got there a busload of Korean tourists arrived.

Coffee Maker

In 2004 we embarked on a lengthy quest to find a particular kind of coffee maker. That quest ended on May 4th 2004 when we at last found the elusive device.

However, tonight the Bodum Coffee Maker lies shattered and broken on the floor...

What does the Glass Thingy do?

From Message

It sits in the neck of the upper glassy bulb like a plug - the wide bit covering the hole which leads to the lower glassy bulb. The lower surface of the wide bit is not smooth. It therefore makes an imperfect seal and acts as a coffee filter. Water can go up and down between the bulbs, but the coffee stays in the top. This is much better than the fabric filter and spring system that comes with the machine as it is much easier to clean and easier to insert.

Rock Garden

Yuko went out for most of the day, leaving me to explore the world. I went to the beach...

Beach

Near the beach, I found a genuine Rock Garden - perhaps the first I've ever seen...

Rock Garden

ChesSOS

The software project I've been working on has grown to 6000 lines of code! It has now reached the beta-testing stage and is ready to be revealed to a limited audience. It's called ChesSOS - which doesn't mean anything really, but I thought it sounded better than the working title which was GameWonky.

I actually put a link to it on this page (over there on the left) a couple of days ago, so that Googlebot would find it. Sure enough, it only took a few hours before Googlebot paid its first visit.

One reader also spotted it and registered as a beta-tester. He then proceeded to totally humiliate me in this game and this game. Of course I can't be expected to play well as I'm concentrating on the code rather than the games! It sounds plausible anyway.

Fifi

The guy from Laptop.com.au called me today to say that Fifi's new motherboard has arrived in Melbourne! It will soon be fitted, and Fifi should be flying back to Sydney by the end of this week. And it will only cost $900!

Yuko is still skeptical.

While there, I found some keys hanging on a tree...

Then I took a series of pictures at various exposures. The difficult thing was focusing because the moon was still quite small in the viewfinder. This was the best shot...

The weather was perfect, except for a bit of wind blowing my newspaper about. After we'd eaten, the waitress came over and said "the chef would like to know if you'd like two free glasses of champagne to celebrate the new year." Of course we did!

She brought us the champagne and then said that the chef also wanted us to have a Panettone! It seems that every time we go to Bardeli's the chef gives us some free stuff!

Fifi

In the morning, we went to the City (actually Surry Hills) to visit the Laptop.com.au shop. Yuko bought a wireless mouse there some time ago and it has stopped working, so she wanted to go back to demand satisfaction.

I also wanted to hassle them about Fifi. I

left Fifi with them way back in October to have the mother-board replaced. I'm starting to think that it's never going to happen.

The guy at the shop tested Yuko's mouse, and agreed that it was faulty. He offered her another mouse (not a wireless) as a replacement. She took it.

As for Fifi... The guy promised to chase up the status (they've been waiting for the motherboard from Dell) on Monday. If the part is not in transit, he'll cancel the order. Yuko asked if we could have Fifi back on the spot, but the guy said Fifi is in Melbourne.

Happy Epiphany to blog readers!

According to tradition, at Epiphany, the residents of Lane Cove throw their dead out onto the street. Here are some images of this ancient custom in practice...

Yuko Turns Professional

We stopped at the petrol station to feed Belinda, and while Yuko was paying, the guy behind the counter noticed Yuko's camera. He said "Are you a photographer?" Of course Yuko said "Yes". They guy said that he was a member of the local tennis club and that they wanted a photographer to take some pictures for their new web site. Yuko gave him her contact details and he said he would be in contact regarding the photographic assignment - but it won't be for a couple of months. Yuko took his picture to demonstrate her craft...

Birthday

Happy birthday to me,
Happy Birthday to me,
Happy birthday Noswonky,
Happy Birthday to me!

Kazuki and Yuko gave me a joint stack of presents...

Kazuki & Yuko's presents
Kazuki's card

Sayonara Kazuki

Yes, today was Kazuki's last day with us.

After breakfast, we piled into the car and headed for the airport. A short distance from home, we came upon a scene of carnage. The road was closed and we had to take a detour. Yuko took a picture of the scene...

Road Carnage

Kazuki's fishing rod (the one Yuko gave him for Christmas), did not fit in his luggage. So he carried it like this...

The errant fishing rod

When we took him to the check-in desk, they said he couldn't take the rod into the plane as hand luggage. They advised us to go and buy a cardboard cylinder from the Post Office so that we could check it in. But then on of the airline staff brought out some bubble-wrap and tape, and we wrapped it in that.

Then Yuko had a fight with the girl at the check-in desk. She wanted Kazuki to be take his main luggage onto the plane as hand-luggage. The bag was small, but still quite big for hand-luggage. They measured it and said it was ok, but they still advised us to check it in. But Yuko said "What if some bastard puts drugs in his bag?". When Yuko used the word "bastard", the check-in girl had to make an effort to avoid laughing.

Anyway, they let him take the bag on the plane.

Then, while we were waiting for an airline staff-member to come and escort Kazuki through customs and immigration, another couple came over and sat with us. They were sending their 5-year old daughter on the plane alone. She and Kazuki would be sitting together so they could be supervised as a block.

After a while, a woman from the airline came and took us to the gate where we said goodbye. The father of the little girl was crying as she disappeared through the gate!

However, as Kazuki disappeared, Yuko and I sighed with relief! Freedom at last!

Kazuki and his travelling companion

Work

After dropping Kazuki, we returned home and the house was very calm and peaceful! I worked on my project for the rest of the afternoon, and got it to the point where I decided to release it for limited Beta-testing on my existing server (noswonky.com). I also registered the new domain name in preparation to move the site to its own domain.

Unfortunately, there seemed to be a problem with the notification emails sent by the server. The last couple of days the notification emails from this blog and from my new site, have been taking ages to arrive. In one case it took two days for an email to get through!

I was reluctant to let anyone try to use the site while this problem persisted. But Yuko goaded me and I relented. By the end of the day, I had one registered user (not counting Yuko and me).

Birthday Dinner

Mother and Yuko took me to a birthday dinner at Colours of Thai. It was very nice indeed! Then we returned to our house and had birthday cake, supplied by Mother...

We had a small breakfast...

Small breakfast

Kazuki is still mesmerised by the coffee maker. He has a tendency to mess with it while I'm not looking, so I have to keep an eye on him.

Work

Not much else happened.

For the rest of the day, Yuko gave Kazuki some tasks to keep him busy and I worked on my software project. Yuko wants me to release it tomorrow, but I think that's a bit optimistic. However, I got a lot of work done.

Kazuki did come and bug me a few times, at one point demonstrating the firing of his weapon, which he won at Luna Park for demonstrating feats of strength. Surprisingly, he didn't shoot me!

Luna Park

In the late afternoon, we went to Luna Park.

By Day
By Night

Kazuki and I rode the big Ferris Wheel.

Kazuki in the wheel
View from the wheel

Yuko spent much of the time taking pictures, and didn't go on any rides.

Yuko's picture

Kazuki wanted to go on the Rotor. I was a bit scared, but I agreed to go on it with him. Yuko watched from the gallery.

As it spun up, it felt like the whole room was tilting back and I was lying on a sloping surface. The G-force was moderately uncomfortable. I could feel my face being distorted and it became difficult to swallow. But I gradually got used to it and tried lifting my arms of the wall. I could lift my arms, but it was a struggle.

First, we stood in the middle while the floor rose
As it spins, we are pinned against the wall by the G forces

Later, Kazuki wanted to go on the Rotor again. I didn't want to do it again, so Kazuki decided to go without me. But when we went to the entrance, the girl said that there were no other people, and in order to balance the machine, they needed at least two people in the Rotor. So I had to go through it again!

The second time was worse. I think it went faster, and I wondered whether I would live to write about it!

The Rotor

After leaving the park, we walked along under the Harbour Bridge to see the heart on the Eastern side. But it was not lit!

Then Yuko and Kazuki did some souvenir shopping. Kazuki bought a bear for his sister...

Chess

I was enjoying a peaceful sleep-in, when I was awoken by a minor, challenging me to a game of chess, even before I was fully in command of my mental faculties.

Fortunately, I was still able to defeat the challenger, the game ending in the following position after I played Qf8++.

Hot

Today it was hot. In fact it was the second hottest Sydney day on record. Fortunately, it was also watering day, and we took full advantage of our watering rights. We watered in the morning, and again in the evening, and then we watered some more...

The birds were gasping...

Kazuki contributed to the watering effort...

Kazuki gave me some chocolate that he got from Santa because he doesn't like mint flavour. However, the heat had affected it a bit...

Escaping the heat

To escape the heat, we first went swimming at Lane Cove Aquatic Centre. Unfortunately, photography is banned inside the centre, so this is the only picture...

Kazuki and I frolicked in the various indoor pools for about 1.5 hours while Yuko worked on her laptop. We eventually got bored and decided to leave, but we wanted to go somewhere cool. Unfortunately all the cafes in Lane Cove - including Epitome - were closed. We assumed this would be true of other areas too. Then Yuko suggested we go to "33" (which is actually called De Malaya, but we still refer to it as 33 in casual conversation). I called them to see if they were open, and they were! So that's where we went.

We hadn't been there for a while, partly because the standard of the food has declined since the management and name changed. Today's visit confirmed that it hasn't improved, but the air conditioning made it worthwhile.

Lunch at De Malaya (formerly 33)

On the way home from De Malaya, Belinda's thermometer, which shows the outside temperature, got up to 46.5 degrees! It had dropped a little by the time we got home and I took this picture...

Yes, it really was hot.
